An introduction

Theo August Samuel Johnson

Born March 21st, 7 lbs. 13 oz.

Not surprisingly, we think he's pretty close to perfect.

We spent 5 days at the hospital and are only just starting to settle into our new life at home. I won't lie, it's been a real struggle. My body has a lot of healing to do and this little guy has not taken to breastfeeding. Not at all. So there are a lot of challenges ahead - and many more sleepless night - but it is so worth it. Life is just incredible.

I hope to be back to blogging in the very near future but this week is all about getting back on my feet and getting Theo to eat like a champ. See you all very soon! ox

What a cutie!

Keep it up! My little one took 2 weeks before accepting the bottle and 4 weeks before accepting breastfeeding (he was tube feeded for 2 weeks). He is 17 months now and I still breastfeed him part time.

I am sure Theo will be a champ very soon!

Congratulations, what a cute little guy! I hope you feel better soon, my first-born also didn't want to take the breast at all, after 10 days and 2 visits at the osteopath she was taking the breast, she just had a lot of neck pain due to a very long birth and couldn't turn her head properly.
I wish you all the best.

I was wondering when he was going to make and appearance...so glad to see you are all safe and sound.

I also had breastfeeding issues with my son (who is 15 mths old now). He wouldn't breastfeed (just had no idea how to suck) for a month. I had the milk though, and continued to pump milk for him, and trying him on the breast at least once a day (as I was advised by a lactation counsellor), and magically at exactly 1 month old he started sucking!! I managed to breastfeed him until 11 months, and was so happy I persevered. You are in MTL, (me, Quebec City)so you can probably take advantage of the same lactation expert service that I did. I got the referral through the amazing CLSC nurse who visited me at home. It's a rotating service that goes from clinic to clinic, and you just have to make an appointment. I had a wonderful nurse named Nancy give me get advice and encouragement. I wish you all the luck in the world, and just remember things don't always go how we imagine or hoped, but just what you know is best for your child, and everything will be alright in the end. Enjoy your new little one; He is breathtaking.

Félicitations ME, à toi et ton conjoint!

Congratulations! What a lovely picture.

I'm sure you're getting lots of advice, but thought I'd offer some encouragement. No matter how you end up getting him to eat (bottle, breast, tubes, all milk, all formula, combo until he feeds well, whatever!), it will feel stressful and challenging, but you'll get there.

I've been checking your blog every morning to see your good news. He's beautiful, and you will heal. Take care of yourself and the difficult time will pass, things are seldom what you dream or expect them to be. So many adjustments to make every day, but you will all be fine. I do love his name, and he looks so sweet as a little bundle. All my best wishes from the west coast of Canada.

I've been checking for updates recently, too. Phew! So glad that you and Theo are ok.

These first weeks can be really hard. (around 6 weeks it starts to get easier, promise, and at 12 weeks it all feels a little more normal!) I wish for you...

1. your mama (the best person to help at this time in my experience)
2. no guilt (do what's easiest for you and baby and what makes your experience liveable and happy, even if that means compromising your pre-baby intentions)
3. a husband who cooks/buys you yummy things to eat so you can just rest when baby rests (think you've got one of those, no?) Good food makes everything better.

Good luck, we are all rooting for you and so happy that Theo is here!

Congratulations!!! what a lovely name, so sweet!!!!

Lactation consultants are so worth it! I was lucky that my town had a free drop-in breastfeeding clinic. I did a quick search in MTL and found that there is one at Jewish General Hospital from 9am-12pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Room E-0010. You probably already know this, but I thought it might not hurt to try to do some legwork for you...after all, you did just have a baby! If you want to call them for information: (514) 340-8222 ext. 3269.

I strongly, strongly recommend asking your doctor for Dr. Jack Newman's All Purpose Nipple Cream if you have any nipple soreness whatsoever...and to do it before you get too sore. It's a prescription cream, and it completely cleared up my blisters and cracks and soothed the pain of raw skin within a day and a half.

Your son looks perfect :) I love the name Theo. Good luck with adjusting to your new stage of life!

He is so beautiful! Good job, Mama! Welcome to Earth, baby! How wonderful.

You may already know about the breastfeeding clinic at the Herzl at the UGH but they may be able to help. Three friends got BIG help there with varying degrees of success. Also, I hired a location consultant named Naznin Hebert to come to our house in the second week. She was practical, helpful and encouraging, suggesting improvements that made breaatfeeding a lot more comfortable. She's on the South Shore but does housecalls. She's probably listed in your packet of info from the hospital. Also, lanolin cream will magically cure cracks between feedings. Soften up the cream by holding it between your thighs.

Birth is a traumatic process. Give yourself lots of time to recover physically and mentally and emotionally. Just be. Hold Theo. Let Michael hold you. Ask for help. Let go of all your expectations. Free yourself and talk about it. Lots of women will listen to your experience and share their truth. It is not easy but it will be okay.

What a beautiful baby. I feel weep and giggly just seeing his photo, so sweet! Congratulations to you and Michael! Hang in there!

Wow, what a beautiful little boy!! All the best for you, Mike and Theo! I totally agree with Anne at first the whole feeding issue is stressful but you'll get there...
and I also agree with Sam, lol, in 6 weeks everything will be smoother and in 12 weeks you'll be pretty adjusted.
Sending you positive vibrations from Buenos Aires.
xoxo

Congrats! Don't worry, breastfeeding takes time, time, time, and oh, time- throw in some crying (by you, as well as the babe!). I knew a lady whose milk didn't come in for ten days and baby took a looong time to get the hang of it. And it took my body 6 months to not feel pain as a result of the birth process, and another 6 months for my body to feel 'normal' again. I remember crying and thinking that my body will always be and pain and that I'll never feel like myself again, but trust me- the day will come. In the meantime love your babe, your husband, and yourself!

Congratuations Marie-Ève and Mike. Theo is gorgeous. Hang in there ME, breastfeeding is not easy at first. I was told to hang in there for 6 to 8 weeks before it got better and after 2 months it was a breeze. My little one is almost 8 months old and I'm still breastfeeding her, it got much easier than at the beginning. Can't wait to see more pictures of the little guy. Love his name by the way, beautiful.
