...Mike and I are going on an adventure!
We leave on December 16th to spend Christmas in England's Peak District then it's off to London for a few weeks with some side trips including Amsterdam. We'll be in Morocco for a little while and then spending February in Spain. The rest of our adventure is still up in the air and I kind of like it. We're going to spend the next few months discovering new places, meeting new people and re-evaluating our career goals.
I'm terrified/excited about this little adventure. On some days, I feel like leaving our apartment and our steady jobs for less than 4 months of travel is a bit crazy. We've gotten used to steady salaries and a routine. On the other hand, I feel really proud that Mike and I are on the same page and willing to jump into the unknown together. We're fortunate to have the savings to back up this venture although some might say that the most logical thing to do is invest this money into a house or RRSPs. But I see this trip as an investment in and of itself.
This isn't something we spent months planning. In fact, this sort of all came together in a matter of weeks. Mike's grandparents invited us to spend Christmas with them in Buxton and after some long discussions, we decided that this was our big chance to do something completely crazy and that, quite simply, made us happy. A few years ago, I lost my grandmother, my uncle and a childhood friend in a short time span. It was all unexpected and heartbreaking but it taught me a very important lesson at an age where I felt so invincible - life is short. You have to make the most of every day and sometimes you have to get off the beaten path. So that's what we're doing.
The good news is...I'm going to take you off the beaten path with me! I'll be blogging from abroad (when I find an internet connection anyways) and sharing this crazy adventure with you all. Lake Jane has really grown in the last 2 years but it remains a very personal project and I couldn't imagine not documenting my thoughts and travels on here. The blog will take on a different form while we're away and I hope you'll stick around to see what happens. As always, thanks for your support. You're the best!

P.S. - Are we completely insane?

you already know how i feel, but i'd like to make it public: you guys are making the right decision!go for it! i'll be living vicariously through you xoxo
Are you nuts!!!
I'm pretty sure that everyone around you is sad not to be joining you. :-(
Enjoy,
Sylvie
Not insane at all! You'll love it all while it's happening and never forget it once it's over. Almost two years ago today, I was gone for six months in Europe, India and South America, and I'm already thinking of ways to take another long trip. Have a great time!
how exciting! I say live it up and have a ball, not crazy at all.
To that, I can only say Amen. Life is there to be live and not for being trap in a life dictated by social standards. You are doing probably the best decision in your lifetime here. This is a new beginning. I'm very very happy for you and Mike. And for the rest of us, it's only a wake-up call of moving our ass closer to our dreams and goals. Thank-you for this amazing post. Have a good trip. Xx
NO! Completely inspiring. My fiancee and I talk often about packing up and moving to a small town in the middle of nowhere together, leaving all the trappings of city life behind. I am so happy for y'all taking the leap! It will be an incredible adventure and I can't wait to follow along!
That's fantastic news! Good for you guys! Perhaps I'll dig up the courage and do the same with my future husband. I always wanted to live in the south of France...Bonne Chance! Chloe
yippeeee!!!!! you are doing the RIGHT thing!!! Thanks for sharing it all with us!! Hooray for you for making it happen!
i think anyone can make travel happen! people often tell me they are jealous that i am traveling for so long but i am only able to do it while working and because i don't have a car, mortgage, kids, or dependents! anyhow... thanks for giving us that background. i can totally relate and i think it is too sweet that you and your hubby get to go together!
i will stay tuned for your adventures!
A grand adventure shared by two people in love? Nothing can be better. :)
I cannot wait to hear about all of the fun you will have - thank you in advance for sharing your stories and bringing more unique perspectives to your blog!!
If you're insane then you're the best kind of insane. This adventure sounds incredible and life-changing. I wish I had the guts to do something similar. Best of luck to both of you, I can't wait to read all about it!!!
Insane? No way. Inspirational? Absolutely! Can't wait to see where your adventures take you two.
i think it's the most amazing thing ever. you know how much we love to travel so i'm 100% with you. go for it! we'll have to spend several days all together telling stories when we all get back!
Meve, so excited for you guys. You are absolutely not insane and I GUARANTEE you, 5, 10, 20 years down the road you will be so happy you did this while you had the chance. I can't tell you how many people I know who regret not doing something like that before they had kids and got settled. I plan on doing more of it myself. The only risk is that it is bound to create a monster within you, an insatiable urge to travel the whole bloody world.
You are not crazy : life is more than une hypothèque. There is a whole world out there, why not just jump into it ?
i'm so proud and happy for you! you already know how i feel: i'm freaking thrilled! i'm going to miss you so so much (plus your adventure overlaps with mine) but you are going to have the time of your life.
you two are doing the right thing by living it up now while you're life allows for it.
i love you!
WOW...
I was not expecting this kind of feedback and I am completely overwhelmed to say the least. Your comments mean the world to me. Love you guys!!!

Congratulations! You may be nuts - but who says nuts is bad?? Not me! I love reading your blog and am currently on a bit of an adventure myself. My fiance and I moved to Vienna from Toronto a couple years ago and although he is here furthering his career we are both definitely exploring all the wonderful and adventurous things Europe has to offer! Good luck and can't wait to read all about it.

We'll be following for sure. Reading 'Lake Jane' is part of my morning, it's the second thing I do at work~ I can't wait to see where this world takes you! It'll be so much fun!
There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.
Ceux qui regardent la parade, ceux qui sont dans la parade et ceux qui disent , quelle parade ?
You are in the parade Marie-Ève....That is the only way to go !
The house will come, and the RRSP will come....ANYWAY !
Go girl Go !
You are not insane at all!!
You are brilliant, brave and insightful. I can't wait to follow you on your adventure and continue to catch a glimpse of the world as you see it.
You will never forget this adventure. We will all be following you from far and will all be here waiting for you when you get back.
Bon voyage.
this is so amazing! you must go! travel and blog the world! xxo

You are not insane!!! Now is totally the time! Justin and I did 10 months of travel and dont regret a single minute of it. We met a lot of people in their 60's and plus who told us that now was the right time..no car, no kids no mortgage....thats the best time! Have an amazing adventure!
You can check our adventure blog at www.justinfrancis.org/steadybeat
Maybe it will inspire you to buy a boat for your adventure!
You're pretty much living out my ultimate dream and I am so happy for both of you.
You're absolutely right: life IS too short. And who wants to look back on their life and wonder what might've been, right? Right! :)
Can't wait to go on this adventure with you two.
And yes, you're insane. Insanely amazing and brave! ;)
Brilliant! This sounds like a wonderful plan and such an adventure. I wish I had the courage to do what you're doing! Maybe after a few years of steady work and savings... You are a real inspiration. I'm so glad you'll be blogging along the way!
I'm jealous! Sounds absolutely wonderful. Beware of bedbugs in Amsterdam (I hear silk sleep sheets - available at MEC- keep them out). Bon Voyage!
Oh Marie-Eve Marie-Eve Marie-EVE!!!! SOOOOO excited for you both!! Christian and I are planning some adventures of our own for next year and I tell you, the present is always the best time. No regrets. You'll have to come by before you leave and then we'll have some lovely renos to show you when you get back :) HIP HIP HOORAY!! CARPE DIEM!!
Nope, not insane at all! I say... do it! You'll learn so much about yourselves - your children and grandchildren will thank you!
WOW! Seriously, live it up! What an amazing adventure and a once in a lifetime opportunity! if i had the means i would be doing the same thing! Good luck and have so much! I can't wait to read all about your journey!
So exited for you. Do not look back because you are right that it gets more difficult as you have a mortgage etc. I am supremely jealous of you two. We just made the journey to NZ and I really had a huge shock after getting back from vacation, thinking to myself, why don't I do this more often? Oh yeah, job, mortgage etc...
can't wait to read your stories! No you're not crazy it's a one time thing :) go you!
WOW!!! What a great news!
I completly agree with Jipé... This is good decision! Go go go!!
Have a wonderful adventure ;-)
absolutely not! we got married in july, packed up our stuff (in a city where we were living with amazing jobs and a beautiful apartment) and moved to london--for the same reasons, we wanted to travel and enjoy some fizz & bang before we settled in. it's scary, but it's fantastic and worth doing while you can. not to mention how incredible the adventure to go with your partner!
(p.s. thanks for having such a kicking blog! i've been a secret reader for a bit now)
Hi! What a great idea. It's okay to feel a little crazy. It's a big change but will be totally worth it! I think it's awesome.
not insane, awesome!!! I wish I could go on an adventure like this. I hope I will still have my chance to do so. And it sounds like you deserve it.
you're not completely insane, but more completely cool !
It's a great, brave and exciting thing to do, and it seems like the right time for you guys, it's gonna be wonderful !!
if you ever land in paris and need some tips, feel free to ask !
I love hearing when someone decides to make a bold move. My travel experiences have changed me and have allowed me the courage to take risks daily.
Way to go! You've got me hooked on Lake Jane, by the way, so I'm happy to follow you over seas.
I completely understand how you feel and you should be proud of yourselves! So many people are afraid to pursue their dreams or make spontenuous decisions...and before they notice life passes them by.
Well done, and thanks for this inspiring revelation!
Hello!
Emmanuelle
That is so exciting! I can't wait to see your adventure unfold!
Yes, go for it, you will have a great time. Experience other cultures. Travel while you can. I was about your age when I packed up and moved to the USA. I can't wait to make plans for our next trip.
Best wishes,
Gill
